Fayetteville Area Tri-Warriors is proud to be a part of the Veteran Suicide Awareness & Prevention Series right here in our very own area. Being embedded in a Military community, we find it important to raise awareness for Veterans and the increased risk of suicide due to the life of a Military Veteran.
The VSAP Series is comprised of a series of physical challenges that are designed to raise awareness to Veteran Suicide as well as fundraise for organizations that provide services directly responsible to prevent Veteran Suicide. The nature of the VSAP Series is a triathlon based series that spread out over a course of a few months. Every event will have a 22 theme to coincide with the 22 Veterans a day who commit suicide.
The Veteran Suicide Awareness & Prevention Ride started in 2019 as a therapy ride between two Veterans who were using bike riding as a coping mechanism for depression and PTSD. While planning to go on the 430 miles ride they decided to publicize the ride to raise awareness for Veteran Suicide. Along the ride, the group stops every 22 miles to remember a Veteran who has committed suicide. The ride is 430 miles over 5 days, with the first 4 days consisting of 4×22 mile memorial segments and the last day consisting of 2×22 mile memorial and 1×30 mile rider reflection segment. These Veterans made impacts for their Country, families, and friends. Unfortunately, each one dealt with life endeavors and challenges with a solution of ending their life. Their service and life shouldn’t end there, and Veterans should learn ways to cope and deal with life situations in ways that allow them to continue living with their families and friends. During the 1st year, the 4 man team raised over $3k to cover ride expenses and a $1k donation to Mission 22. The 2nd year the 15 rider team raised over $8k to cover ride expenses and a $5k donation to Mission 22.
With the success of the past 2 years of the VSAP bike ride, we wanted to reach a broader community to raise even more awareness for Veteran Suicide and Prevention. As the local Club President, Ricky decided to incorporate a Triathlon Series for the VSAP. So, this year we will reach out to swimmers, cyclists, and runners to offer them a physical challenge and a platform to raise awareness. Each event will have a 22 theme and a physically demanding challenge. The first event in the series will be a 2.2 mile swim, followed by a 22 miles/22k/2.2m runs/walk, then finishing up with the 430 mile Ride. Each event will have an expert from that sport to serve as the event director. All medals will consist of a ⅓ puzzle piece that forms together to make a full medal for the persons that complete the entire series of events.
